ABSTRACT

This retrospective study compares the stapling haemorrhoidectomy [SH] and the Milligan-Morgan [MM] haemorrhoidectomy. Two groups of patients from Fujairah hospital were compared. The first group consisted of sixty [60] patients with third and fourth degree haemorrhoids who underwent the SH between February 2000 and February 2002. The second group was of 60 historical control patients who underwent MM haemorrhoidectomy between January 1990 and December 2001. The SH procedure had a shorter operating time [12min vs. 17min] [p<0.0001], required less postoperative narcotic analgesia [7 /60 vs. 45 /60] [p<0.0001], with a shorter hospital stay [1 vs. 3.5 days] [p<0.0001] and less time off work [6 days vs. 18 days] [p<0.0001]. There were more cases of anal stenosis in the MM group [5 /60 vs. 2 /60]. From this study, stapling haemorrhoidectomy seems to be safe and as effective as Milligan-Morgan haemorrhoidectomy and has the added advantages of a shorter operating time and less post operative pain leading to faster recovery

ABSTRACT

Fresh and refrigerated royal jelly samples were examined to evaluate their chemical composition, antibacterial properties and biological effect. The results indicated that a major component of all tested samples was moisture; the range measured was 59.4-66.5%. Whereas, for protein, the range measured was 12.8-15.1%, for fats 7.9-9.9%, for carbohydrates 11.0-12.3% and for ash 0.9-1.5%. Potassium was the most abundant element rather calcium, sodium, iron and phosphorus. Measured amounts of vitamins in fresh samples were 6.3, 7.1, 12.4, 8.3 and 3.2 ug/g for vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and C, respectively. Storage of royal jelly under refrigeration conditions could not alter significantly either chemical composition or antibacterial activities except acidity of tested samples, which undergoes noticeable elevation fructose representing the major sugar fraction [52.6%-54.4%] followed by glucose and sucrose [28.6%-29.6 and 8.0%-8.6%, respectively]. Proline, lysine, arginine, glutamic and aspartic acids were the major amino acids present, while tryptophane was not detected. The antibacterial activities of royal jelly appeared at 25% [aqueous solution] and above concentrations. Royal jelly had a clear effect on the reduction of blood cholesterol and the increase of blood hemoglobin in the tested rats

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted on 238 patients. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumonia played a major role in the nosocomial infections. On studying the suspected sources for nosocomial infections, wall and floor, followed by medical staff were the most possible sources for nosocomial infections with P. Aeruginosa, while air, followed by medical staff were the suspected sources for K. Pneumoniae. Fourteen antibiotics were tested on clinical and control isolates of bacteria showing that the most effective antibiotic against P. Aeruginosa was amikacin, followed by aztreonam and ceftazidime, while ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were the most effective antibiotics against K. pneumoniae. Alkaline glutaraldehyde and povidone-iodine disinfectants were tested for their minimum inhibitory concentration

ABSTRACT

Serum samples were collected from 100 women suffering from recurrent spontaneous albumen and their history of abortion ranged from 2 to 5 timesThe screening of collected sera against Treponema pallidum antigen by VDRL test revealed prevalence rate of 6% and using TPHA as confirmation gave a positive rate of 4% The collected sera were screened against CMV antigen by the IFA technique to detect the presence of IgM and IgG antibodies; the total percent of detected antibodies was 57% and IgM was present in 10%, while IgG in 47% Confirmation of the presence of these antibodies was performed using CF test which was positive in 30% of the studied patients

ABSTRACT

Preoperative total and differential leucocytic counts were made in 60 patients with acute appendicitis as well as postoperative histopathological-examination of the removed appendices. The relation between histopathology and leucocytic count was compared as well as other results. It has been concluded that, leucocytic count could be used to confirm the diagnosis of clinically suspected acute appendicitis. When the clinical findings are at variace with the leucocytic count, the clinical diagnosis should take priority
